Mathias Énard, after studying Art History at the École du Louvre, went on to study Arabic and Persian. Following extended stays in the Middle East, he settled in Barcelona in 2000, where he collaborated with various cultural magazines. Alongside his work as professor of Arabic at the Autonomous University of Barcelona, he also works as a translator.His notable works include Bréviaire des artificiers, Zone, Parle-leur de batailles, de rois et d'éléphants, Rue des voleurs, L'alcool et la nostalgie, La Perfection du tir, Dernière communication à la Société proustienne de Barcelone, and Le Banquet annuel de la Confrérie des fossoyeurs (translated as The Annual Banquet of the Gravediggers’ Guild by Frank Wynn). With Boussole (translated as Compass by Charlotte Mandell) he won the Prix Goncourt and the Von Rezzori Prize and was also a finalist for the Man Booker International Prize and the European Strega Prize.
