Nikola Madzirov is a  Macedonian poet, essayist, and translator, was born in Strumica, near the border with Bulgaria and Greece, into a family of exiles from the Balkan Wars. Regarded as one of the most prominent Macedonian poets, he has published poetry collections that have garnered prestigious awards and has participated in numerous literary festivals across Europe, the United States, and South America. His works have been translated into more than thirty languages, and some of his poems have been set to music by jazz composer Oliver Lake, a collaborator of Björk and Lou Reed. He is one of the coordinators of the international poetry network Lyrikline, based in Berlin.
