Applied economics

Let’s talk about you: what is your background, what do you teach, and what are your research interests?
My name is Carlo Giupponi and I teach courses in economics of the environment and natural resources. I currently teach on the Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Finance, the Master’s Degree in Environmental Humanities and the PhD in Science and Management of Climate Change. My interests are currently focussed on efforts to make what we know about global change available to society by providing tools for informed planning and decision-making that are resilient to the shocks we expect in the near future.

Tell us about your academic path.
I started my academic career at the School of Agriculture of the University of Padua, then I moved to the Statale di Milano and in 2008 to Ca' Foscari, gradually shifting my interests and skills from technical to economic areas, but always keeping an integrated approach that combines these two areas. I have always combined my research and teaching efforts with helping to run the institutions where I work, with many positions of leadership, delegation, participation in committees, etc. I am currently Dean of Venice International University.

What are you most passionate about in your field of research?
Having the chance to address new topics according to your own interests, creating a path of personal knowledge, shared with the colleagues you come into contact with from time to time in different countries and especially with the young people you work with.

What do teaching and researching mean to you?
A researcher must first of all be curious, and doing research also means nurturing your curiosity day by day — by trying to learn new things, sharing them with other colleagues, working in larger or smaller groups and national and international networks, and sharing your knowledge in what you read and what you write in journals or in the books you publish.
