The activities carried out in these campaigns have been focused on sampling and treatment of environmental matrices to monitor some pollutants (organic and inorganic). Seawater samples were treated according to the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS) protocol for humic substances extraction, and the development of sampling method for sea surface microlayer were some of the activities carried out during these campaigns. A prototype for the surface-sampling (Multi-Use Microlayer Sampler - MUMS) and a Sea Surface Autonomous Module unit (SESAMO) platform have been developed, tested, and used for the study and characterization of the sea surface microlayer. The principal aim of the Polar Chemistry project was/is the study of geochemical cycles of pollutants and natural matter. The project involved scientific groups in Italy, from the university and the research institutes.
