The course is one of the historical-artistic disciplines characterizing the degree course in Conservation and management of cultural heritage and activities. The course is the first module of History of medieval art: it can be chosen individually (FT0233 6 cfu) and together with the second module - History of medieval art 2 dedicated to a monographic theme - allows to obtain 12 cfu (FT0232).
The course is aimed at acquiring basic knowledge of the History of Italian and European art from Late Antiquity to the Late Middle Ages.
- - knowledge and understanding: knowledge of terminology; knowledge of main works of art of the Medieval Art;
- ability to apply knowledge and understanding: knowledge of how to use a specific terminology and ability to recognize main artists and works of art using the tolls provided (bibliographies, lessons and texts given by the teacher)
- ability to understand: capability in analyzing a work of art, referring them to a correct temporal and cultural collocation; to be able to argue with property of language and correct formal analysis;
- communication skills: knowing how to use an appropriate and specific terminology, introduced and explained at lesson or on recommended texts and books; apply a good Italian syntax and grammar; being able to behave in a respectful and profitable way with professors and peers;
- learning skills: being able to recognize the fundamental protagonists of the arts and period of the Medieval Art; being able to understand how to connect a work of art to a specific cultural moment.

Through a selective examination of the main monumental complexes, works and the most significant artists, the course intends to deal with fundamental themes of the History of Medieval Art and provide tools for the recognition of works and their periodization. Works will be examined and problems will be addressed, paying attention to formal and material aspects, to the historical and cultural context. Attention will be paid to different case studies (architecture, sculpture, painting, goldsmith’s art) to illustrate different artistic expressions and productions, providing examples of diversified analyses in a long-term chronological path, paying attention to terminology and methods.

About final examination: the exam consists in the writing of 5 short texts (20-25 lines) to demonstrate the ability to recognize and comment on the artworks analyzed, the knowledge of the themes dealt with during the course and the acquisition of specific skills.

The test is passed by obtaining a score equal to or higher than 18/30. The score is assigned on the basis of the 5 answers, evaluated individually and as a whole.

Regarding the grading scale for the oral exam:

A. Scores in the range of 18-22 will be assigned for:

- Sufficient knowledge of the textbooks and related topics

- Limited ability to use data and form independent judgments

- Sufficient communication skills.

B. Scores in the range of 23-26 will be assigned for:

- Fair knowledge of the textbooks and related topics

- Fair ability to use data and form independent judgments

- Fair communication skills.

C. Scores in the range of 27-30 will be assigned for:

- Good or excellent knowledge of the textbooks and related topics

- Good or excellent ability to use data and form independent judgments

- Fully appropriate communication skills.

D. The “laude” will be awarded to students with excellent knowledge and comprehension of the textbooks and related topics.
Classroom lessons with the help of image files (with indications, captions, source texts) available to students on the Moodle platform.
In case it is not possible to follow the lessons the students are invited to contact the teacher (via email) to arrange a meeting to gain an understanding of the structure of the course (also thanks to the materials available in moodle) for adequate preparation for the exam.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "Human capital, health, education" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
