This is one of the courses of the degree “Linguistic and Cultural Mediation” where the students will acquire skills related to the technologies and tools in the field of linguistic and cultural mediation.
The course enables students to acquire knowledge of the basic principles of mediation and, more specifically, of the aspects related to educational linguistics. The aim of the course is to develop knowledge of the concept of mediation as elaborated in European documents as CEF and CV. The course will emphasize cultural and intercultural communication, adaptation of communication and texts, and will develop knowledge of theoretical concepts and the ability to understand their application.
The students will acquire and be able to apply basic knowledge of the basic principles of mediation, with particular reference to aspects relating to educational linguistics.
There are no prerequisites.
Different topics are introduced: the Common European Framework and the Companion Volume; cultural and intercultural communication; mediation activities and strategies; the scales and the descriptors for mediation; strategies to adapt language and to simplify a text.

Further readings will be provided during the course.
Oral exam with open questions based on Companion Volume and on topics discussed during lessons.
The online part can recognize up to two points for the final exam according to the activities carried out.

A. Scores in the 18-22 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- sufficient knowledge and applied understanding with reference to the syllabus;
- limited ability to collect and/or interpret data, making independent judgements;
- sufficient communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language.
B. marks in the 23-26 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- discrete knowledge and applied understanding with reference to the syllabus;
- discrete ability to collect and/or interpret data, making autonomous judgements;
- fair communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language.
C. Scores in the 27-30 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- good or very good knowledge and applied understanding with reference to the syllabus;
- good or very good ability to collect and/or interpret data, making independent judgements;
- fully appropriate communication skills, especially in relation to the use of specific language.
D. Honours will be awarded in the presence of knowledge and ability of applied understanding with reference to the
programme, judgement and communication skills, excellent.
