The course is part of the core educational activities of the Master’s Degree Programme in History from the Middle Ages to the Present, and of the Master's Degree Programme inter-university in Religious Studies.
The course aims at the following objectives:
- an advanced knowledge of the historical phenomena of Christianity in contemporary age, with particular regard to the dynamics of Christianity on a worldwide level;
- the ability to apply historical methodology to the Christianity in contemporary age;
- the learning of skills for analysing historical sources concerning the Christianity carefully, also through the use of IT and digital tools;
- the ability to study and discuss in depth the historical phenomena related to Christianity in the contemporary age, also in a multidisciplinary context;
- the development of those learning skills that are necessary to teaching history, with particular regard to the history of Christianity and the contemporary history.
The course aims at the following learning objectives:
1. Knowledge and understanding
- in-depth knowledge of the main aspects and problems of the history of Contemporary Christianity;
- advanced knowledge of the historical methodology;
- advanced knowledge of historical sources concerning the history of Christianity in Contemporary Age.
2. Application of Knowledge and Understanding
- ability to apply historical methodology to the history of Christianity;
- ability to analysing in depth historical sources concerning the history of Christianity in Contemporary Age;
- ability to carry out innovative research in the history of Christianity in Contemporary Age.
3. Making judgements
- ability to make and discuss interpretative hypotheses in the context of contemporary history of Christianity and the Churches on the basis of primary sources and historiography.
4. Communication Skills
- capacity to communicate and debate, also with specialists, main developments and problems of the history of Contemporary Christianity.
5. Learning Skills
- development of those learning skills that are necessary to continue to undertake further study in history of Christianity in Contemporary Age in a manner that may be largely self-directed or autonomous.
Basic knowledge of contemporary history (20th-21st centuries).
Critical analysis of the history of Christianity in Contemporary Age, the research methodology and the historiography through the close examination of a case study: the transition from a preponderantly European Christianity to a multidimensional Christianity on a worldwide level (World Christianity/World Christianities).

The following criteria will be assessed:
- active partecipation in seminar discussions (maximum score 2/30);
- a research paper (20,000 characters including spaces and notes) on a topic to be agreed upon with the instructor (maximum achievable score 9/30);
- highlighting (in oral form) of main issues and new points raised in the research, during the final seminar (maximum score 9/30);
- oral examination on reference texts (maximum attainable score 10/30).
The highest attainable score is 30/30 cum laude.

Regarding the grading scale (how grades will be assigned), regardless of attending or non-attending modem, scores will be assigned according to the following criteria:
A. scores in the 18-20 range will be awarded for a sufficient knowledge of the historical aspects and historiographical issues presented in class and in the reference text, and a sufficient ability to analyze and criticize the documents presented in class;
B. scores in the 21-23 range will be awarded for a fair knowledge of the historical aspects and historiographical issues presented in class and in the reference text, and a fair ability to analyze and criticize the documents presented in class;
C. scores in the 24-27 range will be awarded for a good knowledge of the historical aspects and historiographical issues presented in class and in the reference text, and a good ability to analyze and criticize the documents presented in class;
D. scores in the 28-30 range will be awarded for an excellent knowledge of the historical aspects and historiographical issues presented in class and in the reference text, and an excellent ability to analyze and criticize the documents presented in class;
E. Honors will be awarded for an outstanding knowledge of the historical aspects and historiographical issues presented in class and in the reference text, and an outstanding ability to analyze and criticize the documents presented in class.
Lectures and research seminars, with historiographical insights and presentations of documentary sources.

Given the in-depth nature of the topics during the lessons and seminars compared to the reference text, attendance at the lessons is recommended.

This subject deals with topics related to the macro-area "International cooperation" and contributes to the achievement of one or more goals of U. N. Agenda for Sustainable Development
