The course offers an introduction to some of the texts and debates by historians between the 19th and the 20th century
The expected results are the familiarization with some of the major theoretical and methodological contributions of historiography betwween the XIX and the XX centuries
There are no specific prerequirements.
Historians, historical method, biographies
The course will examine, both through lectures and through common discussions of texts, some of the major methodological contributions of historiography between the XIX and the XX centuries, with a special attention to the question of biography
- Marc Bloch, Apologia della storia o mestiere di storico, Einaudi, Torino 2009 (o altre edizioni)
- Francesco Benigno, Parole nel tempo. Un lessico per pensare la storia, Viella, Roma 2013
And one of the following:
- Sergio Luzzatto (a cura di), Prima lezione di metodo storico, Laterza, Roma-Bari 2010
- Peter Burke, Una rivoluzione storiografica. La scuola delle "Annales", Laterza, Roma-Bari 1992.
The exam is based on a personal discussion with the instructor on the themes of the course and the texts in the bibliography (no distinction is made between students attending or not attending classes).

The grading will be based on: the level of knowledge and of understanding of the reading list for the exam, on the ability to report with appropriate languages the contents of the reading list and to develop thoughts on the exam readings and on related issues, also in an independent way.
Students who are able to report the basic contents of the reading list will receive a "pass" (18-22/30); students who are able to elaborate on and intrepret the contents of the reading list will receive a B grade (22-26/30); students who are able to elaborate on and interpret and to develop also personal thoughts on the content of the readings wil receive and A grade /27-30/30 lode).
