The Great War. Literature and theory of a world conflict.
Through the survey of the literary corpus of the Great War (1914-1918) and of the current studies on the subject, we intend to indicate the essential references to the historical and anthropological aspects of the literary phenomenon, with specific application to the literature of the twentieth century.
The course aims to introduce the cross-study of contemporary texts, with applicative reference to authors, texts, documents and testimonies relating to the experience and memory of the Great War. The educational objectives concern:
a) the basic understanding of the main theoretical definitions that characterize the main literary genres, between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and their reuse in the thematic context of the Great War
b) the ability to recognize these formulas in contexts and languages ​​​​not directly treated in the frontal lessons
c) the ability to apply a specific historical-literary terminology
d) the ability to read and interpret complex literary texts.

Literary models and ideology: historical memory and postmemory. Literary text and extra-literary testimonies: literary genres and private writing: oppositions and intersections – the literature of the First World War as a sample of analysis compared with other media and languages – autobiographical elements and literary elaboration: telling the horror of war – author and audience: split and transformation of the personality of the sender and the recipient of the literary message: main authors – Gabriele D'Annunzio, Alfredo Panzini, Massimo Bontempelli, Giuseppe Ungaretti, Giovanni Comisso.

The exam will be oral and will focus exclusively on the program taught by the teacher. During the oral exam, the teacher will ask questions aimed at assessing the student's preparation, with particular reference to: the level of knowledge and ability to understand and apply theoretical principles to the reading and interpretation of literary texts. The teacher will also verify the learning abilities, communication skills in verbal presentation, and the acquired autonomy of critical judgment.
An optional preparatory written test will be proposed to students for the purpose of useful verification to monitor the level of preparation achieved by the student before taking the oral exam.
