The course is characterising for those students who choose Catalan language and literature A or B in the degree in Languages, civilisation and language sciences, in the three pathways offered (Cultural literature, Linguistic-philological-literature, Political-international) and can also be included in the study plan as a related/integrative or student-choice training activity. In line with the educational objectives of the Degree Course in Languages, Civilisations and Language Sciences, the course enables students to deepen their knowledge of the Catalan cultural heritage from its origins to the 15th century, to develop skills of textual analysis and interpretation and to understand the ways in which the cultural heritage examined responds to the fundamental questions of its time.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDESTANDING
At the end of the Course, the student must demonstrate to know:
- periodisation and contextualization of Catalan Literature from its origins to the 15th century;
- main authors and works of Catalan Literature from its origins to the 15th century;
- methodologies of the analysis and interpretation of the Catalan literary text from its origins to the 15th century.
CAPACITY TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the Course, the student must demonstrate to be able to:
- contextualise main literary currents, authors and works of Catalan Literature from its origins to the 15th century;
- critically present main currents/authors and analyse outstanding works of Catalan Literature from its origins to the 15th century;
- apply the methodologies of analysis and interpretation of Catalan literary text from its origins to the 15th century.
AUTONOMY OF JUDGMENT
- At the end of the Course, the student must be able to express a critical judgement on the results of the critical analysis of the Catalan literary text from its origins to the 15th century, based on the interpretative methodologies acquired.
COMUNICATIVE SKILLS
- At the end of the Course, the student must be able to communicate, using the appropriate terminology and in the adequate critical way, the results of his/her learning with regard to the framing, methodological approach and analysis of the Catalan literary text from its origins to the 15th century.
LEARNING SKILLS
- At the end of the Course, the student must demonstrate that he/she has acquired autonomous learning skills and the ability to self-assess his/her personal preparation in the field of Catalan Literature from its origins to the 15th century, enabling him/her to undertake subsequent studies in this field with a high degree of autonomy.
Basic cultural knowledge of the artistic-literary, historical and socio-political landscape of Spain from its origins to the 15th century. The lectures and examination will be conducted in Italian.
The course focuses on the genesis and evolution of Catalan Literature, from its origins to the 15th century. From this perspective, the chronological development of the main literary genres and the critical approach to their study, as well as the analysis of the most important movements, authors and texts will be illustrated.

- Joanor Martorell, Tirante il Blanco, Torino, Einaudi, 2013, a selection of passages indicated in class.
The acquisition of the knowledge, skills and abilities described above will be verified through an ORAL INTERVIEW of approximately 20 minutes duration, with questions which may also make use of exemplifications on the texts studied. Preparation will be considered adequate (with a grade expressed in thirtieths - 30/30), if the student demonstrates knowledge of the syllabus; if he/she is able to expose, using the specific terminology, the contents developed in class; if independently -that is, without necessarily depending on the presentation of the topics offered by the texts- he/she demonstrates that he/she has acquired critical knowledge of the authors, works and movements studied; if he/she will be able to apply the knowledge acquired, recognizing and establishing interdependent relationships and connections between the topics studied; if he/she will be able to analyze and expose them critically, framing them in their respective periods and areas of reference.

The mark will be determined by knowledge of the required topics (up to 10 points), the ability to go into the subject in depth (up to 5 points), detailed knowledge of the historical context (e.g., periods and framing events) (up to 5 points), accuracy of exposition (up to 5 points) and the ability to articulate independently (up to 5 points).
The course comprises a total of 30 hours of lectures (6 CFU) on the programme indicated, carried out with the aid of critical-literary and audio-visual materials, during which there will be time dedicated to interventions/activities for the students. During the lectures, theoretical discussion will be combined, starting from the critical materials indicated in the syllabus, with the interpretative analysis of the works studied: in addition to the lectures by the lecturer, the student the student must fully prepare the readings indicated in the programme, for critical discussion in class and during the oral examination. Some works and critical materials will be made available on the Moodle platform.
