The course aims to give a current review of recent research dealing with environmental and geological processes, past cryosphere dynamics and their mutual connections with palaeo regional to global climate. Lectures will cover arguments linked to glacial dynamics both in Northern and Southern high latitudes, focusing on ice sheets (e.g. Antarctica, Greenland and the palaeo Eurasian and Laurentide ice sheets). The course is subdivided in four parts: Part 1 provides an overview about marine Polar depositional systems with respect to low-latitudes; Part 2 & 3 provides the basis on geological and environmental data acquisition and multi-proxy analyses in the marine realm and data interpretation in relation to palaeo-climate and paleo-environmental changes and evolution of polar margins. Part 4 proposes a classroom exercise in radiocarbon dating calibration and on the interpretation of multi-proxy data acquired on cores in polar areas.
