Overview: The lesson provides some basic information on atmospheric monitoring principles and the analytical methodologies to assess the air quality in Polar Regions.
Program: Atmospheric pollution: definition, principles of European and International legislation on air quality sources of air pollution in polar regions. Legacy and Emerging atmospheric pollutants (NOx, SOx, atmospheric particulate matter, metals, PAHs, microplastics). Temporal trends of contaminants. Assessment of local and distant sources. Impact of local activities (e.g. research stations, maritime traffic, human settlements, tourism) and urban pollution in Arctic cities. Analytical methodologies to measure air quality, collect aerosol samples and determine contaminants.
