The course aims to give an overview of the history of the technique and style of Venetian glassmaking: the path built through the most interesting glass objects in a chronological span from archaeology to contemporary
I expect that after 30 hours of lectures and visits to archives and historical glass exhibitions, the student will be able to recognize a glass work as Venetian, be able to describe the technique and identify the age.
Interest in the topic and a basic knowledge of the English language
The course will analize at the great examples of archaeological glass produced in the Mediterranean basin and then address the Medieval period with enamel decorated glass. Space will be given to the great inventions of the Renaissance and Baroque (filigree, transparent glass, aventurine, chalcedony, lattimo) to arrive at the 18th century with its extraordinary deseri (monumental centralpiece) and chandeliers. Of the nineteenth century, Murano's reaction after the fall of the Republic (1797) will be analyzed, recovering ancient techniques, opening up to an international market (thanks mainly to Salviati) and founding a Museum dedicated to glass that still exists today. Part of the lecture devoted to Art Nouveau and Deco will be held in the Stanze del Vetroi (Cini Foundation) in front of the great masterpieces of Lerche, Zecchin, Wolf Ferrari, Bellotto and the Primavera glasses by Barovier. Some lectures will be devoted to the mid-twentieth century, from the jump into modernity with Cappellin and Venini to the advent of solid glass with Barbini and Da Ros. I would love to close the lecture series with some examples of glassworks and artists still active.
