HINDI LANGUAGE 3

The course of Hindi Language 3 falls within the characterizing teachings of the third year of the "Indian Subcontinent" curriculum of the course "Languages, Cultures and Societies of Asia and Mediterranean Africa" and it aims to provide students with an in-depth knowledge at intermediate level of the written and spoken Hindi languages, to strengthen the skills of translation and those of oral comprehension and communication.

Its formative objectives fall within the area of language skills learning.

In particular the objectives of the course are: a) to conclude the study of Hindi grammatical structures; b) to provide basic skills to maintain a simple conversation in Hindi in such a way as to be able to interact in the most common communication contexts; c) to provide necessary skills for reading and grammatical analysis of elementary-intermediate Hindi texts (literary and non-literary) modern and / or contemporary.

A further deepening of the knowledge of the language structure through guided reading, translation, analysis and interpretation of different texts, literary styles and reflecting the vast diversity of linguistic registers. The second part of the course will be dedicated to exercises of translating sentences and short texts from Italian into Hindi.

The theoretical notions concerning the use of contemporary standard Hindi will be complemented by the classes held by the native speaker collaborator who will teach students how to express themselves in spoken Hindi in a more articulate fashion facing more complex issues and situations pertaining to their life as students and potential researchers.

The level that students should reach at the end of the course should be around a B1 level of the CEFR.

This class is part of the Hindi language program and it builds on the skills acquired in the "Hindi 2" course.

Intermediate knowledge of written and oral Hindi language (B1 - CEFR).

B1 Level - Threshold
The ability to express oneself in a limited way in familiar situations and to deal in a general way with nonroutine information.

The aim of the course is to achieve a level of language proficiency equivalent to level B1- of the CEFR (Common European framework of reference for language proficiency). In particular:

1. Knowledge and understanding
- Have a solid knowledge of the grammatical system of modern and contemporary Hindi, with particular attention to the syntax of written Hindi;
- Know the key sentences necessary to interact in communication contexts corresponding to the level B1;
- Know an intermediate lexicon of Hindi corresponding to the level B1.


2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
- correctly use the key sentences and lexicon necessary to interact in business communication contexts;
- understand intermediate written literary texts and texts related to politics, society, understanding the sentence structure;
- analyze and translate correctly into Italian intermediate literary texts and texts on topics related to politics and society;
- write and read using an intermediate lexicon;
- analyze and translate correctly into Hindi sentences including relatively complex grammatical structures.

3. Judgement capacity:
- assess the level of one’s language knowledge, skills and abilities.

4. Communication skills
- express the specificities of linguistic and textual analysis using proper terminology.

5. Learning skills
- connect different fields of study and apply your knowledge and skills for personal and professional growth.

• To attend the course, students must have a very good theoretical and practical knowledge of the Italian language: they must be able to express themselves correctly both in writing and in oral form, and master the tools of grammatical analysis and logical analysis.
• To attend the course, students must have a sound knowledge of the Hindi language, its styles, grammar and syntax, and a good working knowledge of the major trends characterizing its literary productions over the centuries.

The course aims at concluding the grammar, vocabulary and syntax of modern and contemporary standard Hindī. In particular we will study in-depth:

- advanced elements of hindi grammar and sentence structures taken from the Sanskrit, Arabic and Persian languages;
- elements of syntax and sentence structure;
- guided reading, analysis and translation of a variety of texts reflecting the linguistic and stylistic diversity of the contemporary Hindi-speaking world;
- intermediate vocabulary.

The given theoretical notions will be applied by degrees in specific exercises and selected translations from Hindi to Italian. In such a way there will be the chance to study and to understand the typical linguistic features (graphic, phonological, morpho-syntactic, but especially lexical) of modern standard Hindi.

The texts in hindi used in class will be handed out in photocopy by the teacher during classes.

The written exam will be divided into two sessions, for each of which will be allotted 2 hrs and a half:

1) during the first session, scheduled for the January session, students will be asked to translate a series of sentences from hindi into italian, with the aim of the aim of testing the abilities in the field of grammar and syntax acquired during the first semester;

2) the second partial, scheduled for the summer session, will consist of i) the translation, again from hindi into italian, of a short passage or paragraph taken from a text chosen on the basis of the level expected and ii) the translation in Hindi of easy Italian sentences.

The two written partials will be completed by an oral examination with the mother tongue collaborator, in the course of which students are expected to show their ability of oral expression acquired.

- analysis and explanation of grammatical issues in class and their practical application through a range of illustrative examples;

- reading in class of unseen hindi texts, analysis and discussion of technical issues, choice of vocabulary and cultural elements emerging from the material analyzed;

- common exercises in class and assignment of individual tasks at home.
