The course is one of the educational activities of the Global Asian Studies Minor and is structured as a workshop where students engage with theories and methodologies used in area studies to develop individual research proposals that integrate them. The course aims to guide students through readings and in-depth analyses, with the participation of guest lecturers. The teaching objectives are to provide useful tools for individual research.






1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1. Knowledge of legal terminology and its use in academic fields.
1.2. to know and understand some legislative issues in specific areas of East Asian law (China, Japan and Korea).
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
2.1. ability to analyze contents and to organize bibliographic sources.
2.2. ability to compare different legal systems and social phenomena.
3. Ability to critically analyse and to learn:
3.1.ability to critically consult the texts provided on moodle and to search for references.
3.2. ability to argue their thesis supporting with evidences and theories.
4. Communication skills:
4.1.ability to communicate your research outcomes.
4.2. ability to relate with other students in order to achieve a common goal.
Knowledge of the geographical-historical, socio-political, and legal-institutional frameworks of the East Asian context, with a particular focus on China, Japan, the Koreas, and Southeast Asia.







The workshop is structured as follows:
Lessons 1-2: Introduction, basic concepts, brainstorming, review of concepts learned in previous modules of the minor, and possible applications in individual research projects; weekly readings.
Lessons 3-4: In-depth discussions with guest lecturers conducting research on specific areas from a disciplinary perspective (disciplines → areas).
Lesson 5: Mid-semester work: creation of a preliminary presentation on participants’ individual research.
Lessons 6-7: In-depth discussions with guest lecturers conducting area studies research while integrating disciplinary perspectives (areas → disciplines).
Lesson 8: Conclusions and final assignment.
Readings will be shared on Moodle by the instructor
Students will be required to give a presentation in class, create and contribute to a newsletter via Padlet, and write a research proposal demonstrating the integration between area studies and disciplines within the scope of individual research.
