Part of the educational activities of the Global Asian Studies Minor, this laboratory is conceived as an interactive workshop where students engage with theories and methodologies used in area studies to develop individual research proposals that integrate them. The course aims to guide students through readings and in-depth discussions with the participation of external lecturers. The teaching objectives are to provide useful tools for individual research and to develop communication skills through work on interactive channels (e.g., newsletters, podcasts).












1. Knowledge and Understanding:
1.1. Understanding globalization processes and their effects in the Asian context.
1.2. Technical and specialized terminology in social sciences and legal studies research, applied to interdisciplinary case studies related to the Asian context.

2. Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding:
2.1. Analysis and in-depth exploration of content.
2.2. Independent retrieval of academic sources.
2.3. Case study analysis and potential generalizations on social phenomena in a globalized context.

3. Critical Thinking:
3.1. Critical reading of academic sources shared via Moodle.
3.2. Formulating arguments supported by evidence and theories.

4. Communication Skills:
4.1. Communicating the results of one’s reflections and analyses in both specialized and general contexts.
4.2. Collaborating with fellow students towards a shared goal (creating a newsletter on the lab's content).
Knowledge of the geographical-historical, socio-political, and legal-institutional frameworks of the East Asian context, with a particular focus on China, Japan, the Koreas, and Southeast Asia.







The workshop is structured as follows:
Lessons 1-2: Introduction, basic concepts, brainstorming, review of concepts learned in previous modules of the minor, and possible applications in individual research projects; weekly readings.
Lessons 3-4: In-depth discussions with guest lecturers conducting research on specific areas from a disciplinary perspective (disciplines → areas).
Lesson 5: Mid-semester work: creation of a preliminary presentation on participants’ individual research.
Lessons 6-7: In-depth discussions with guest lecturers conducting area studies research while integrating disciplinary perspectives (areas → disciplines).
Lesson 8: Conclusions and final assignment.
Readings will be shared on Moodle by the instructor
Students will be required to create and contribute weekly to a newsletter via Padlet by writing short response essays to the assigned readings and guest lectures. They will also need to write a final research proposal, demonstrating the potential for integration between area studies and disciplines within their individual research focus.
