History of Modern Art II, is part of the core educational activities of the Bachelor's Degree programme in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management, taught in continuity with History of Modern Art I (FT0236). It aims at introducing to Italian art history in its European context from the end of the 16th to the end of the 17th century, providing the main critical and methodological tools necessary for the knowledge of the artists and the analysis of the works considered most representative of the period according to the European historiographic tradition.
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the art-historical periodization, knowledge of the main artists, their stylistic orientations, their conception of art, their models and their reception, as well as the most relevant socio-political contexts of patronage.
- Be able to recognize the works of art examined during the lessons and to be able to comment on them, placing them in their context and analyzing their iconography and formal aspects using the tools acquired.
- Be able to explain the multiple aspects of a work of art using precise and adequate terminology, with a clear, coherent and well-articulated level of expression.
- Be able to elaborate, with critical distance, cross-cutting discussions based on the material studied.
No specific prerequisites are required.
Throughout the analysis of paintings, sculptures, architecture, graphics and decorative arts, this course outlines the main aspects of the evolution of visual arts from the end of the 16th century to the end of the 17th century. It adopts a diachronic approach and a series of topics, which correspond to the most typical artistic problems of those times, is examined closely. Particular attention is thus given to: the evolution of the artist and of the beholder; the construction history of the largest architectural monuments and decorative cycles; the dynamics of exchanges between the various artistic centers; some theoretical notions and some technical corollaries; the use of symbols and the concept of visual norm.

The exam consists in the writing of short texts to demonstrate the ability to recognize and comment on the artworks analyzed and the knowledge of the artists and themes dealt with during the course.
Lectures with the use of slides prepared by the teacher.
