The course, classified among the core subjects, aims to provide students with a basic knowledge of the history of Italian Renaissance art, as well as the first critical and methodological tools for studying and analyzing artworks. The most representative artists and their major works will be specifically examined, with particular attention to historical periodization and geographical contexts.
- Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of terminology; knowledge of main artists' poetic, works of art, and schools in the Renaissance;
- Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: knowledge of how to use a specific terminology and ability to recognize main artists and works of art based on lessons and texts given by the teacher;
- Ability to understand: ability to analyze a work of art or an artist's poetics among those studied, placing them within the correct temporal and cultural context; ability to respond to questions with appropriate language and formal analysis;
- Communication skills: Being able to use appropriate and specific terminology, as introduced and explained in lectures or reference texts; applying proper use of Italian syntax and grammar; interacting respectfully and productively with professors and peers;
- Learning skills: being able to recognize the key figures of 15th- and 16th-century art based on the reference study material; being able to chronologically place a work or an artist by making basic comparisons between themes and poetics.
No specific prerequisites are required.
Through a selective examination of major works and the most significant artists, the course aims to address the fundamental themes of Italian Renaissance art history and provide tools for the recognition, periodization, and contextualization of artworks, as well as basic information on iconography and iconology, historiography, and art criticism.
For basic knowledge, in addition to lecture notes and slides, the student can refer to:

In addition to the textbook, it will also be necessary to study the supplementary PDF material available for download on Moodle.
The written exam consists of filling out three worksheets based on the identification of images of artworks presented during the course or included in the textbook, to which two questions on topics covered during the course will be added. The worksheet to be completed will follow these categories: Author, Title, Location, Chronology, Description and Stylistic Analysis, with a Historical-Critical Commentary.

The exam is considered passed with a score of 18/30 or higher.
