This is one of the core courses of the degree programme for those who intend to carry out an in-depth study of the histories, theories and practices of art in its contemporary expressions, between the 20th and 21st centuries. It is open to students whose surnames are included between the letters P-Z.
- knowledge and understanding of the specific terminology and the main idioms, artists, artworks, movements, exhibitions;
- ability to apply knowledge and understanding by knowing how to use an appropriate terminology and recognise the protagonists, themes and objects of study, making use of the appropriate tools;
- ability to express judgements in the historical-critical analysis of contemporary artworks, poetics, histories and practices;
- communication skills that enable the adoption of an appropriate vocabulary and form in dialogue with the professor and the comrades.
Good knowledge of the major historical events and the main movements of thought between the 19th and the 21st centuries, as a general framework in which the histories and theories of the visual arts are included.
The course illustrates what is meant by contemporary art, tracing historical-critical paths that relate modernism and postmodernism up to the latest trends and global languages of the 21st century. Particular attention will be given to the periodization of so-called contemporary art and to the recent reinterpretation of art history from a postcolonial, feminist and ecocritical perspective in order to open the analysis to more non-hegemonic art histories.
The exam bibliography will be shared as soon as possible.
The exam consists solely of a written test with five questions, including the recognition and critical reading of a work of art, based on the study of the notes and bibliographical references. The exam is achieved by answering three of the five questions accurately and comprehensively. The grade will be awarded on the basis of the correctness and completeness of the answers given and the relevance of the language used.
Lessons will be frontal and as far as possible, depending on the number of students, an attempt will be made to actively involve the class in discussion. To facilitate learning, interpretative reading of historical-critical texts and images will be carried out during lessons as methodological exercises. The bibliography of the texts discussed by the professor, as well as the slides shown during lessons, will be made available to the students on the Moodle online platform throughout the course (for copyright reasons, both images and texts cannot be made available in any other way).
