The Microbiology Laboratory module mod.2 is an integral part of the Microbiology course mod.1 CT0534. Both modules of this course are designed to provide basic principles of microbiology to non-biological students.
Students will acquire during the microbiology lab:
-Fundamental knowledge of safety regulations in microbiological laboratory
-Understanding of sterility principles and contamination prevention techniques
-Theoretical knowledge of microbial culture methodologies and isolation

By the end of this laboratory experience, students will be able to:
-Apply laboratory safety and sterility procedures
-Perform culture techniques for isolation and characterization of microorganisms
-Generate microbial growth curves
-Conduct sensitivity tests for antibiotics and antiseptics
-Use optical microscopy for microbial observation and identification
To attend the Microbiology Laboratory mod.2 it is highly recommended to follow the theoretical part of the Microbiology course mod1.
1. Rules of conduct in a microbiology laboratory
2. Hand cleaning protocol, effect of antiseptics on skin microbiome
3. Isolation, propagation and cultivation of a microorganism
4. Characterization of a microorganism at the cellular level and colony morphology
5. Microbial quantification with direct and indirect method
6. Measurement of the ability of a microorganism to resist antibiotics
7. Staining of microorganisms and use of the optical microscope

The laboratory activity will be evaluated through a written test, consisting of exercises and multiple choice questions at the end of the module. The assessment consists of 10 multiple-choice questions. It will be evaluated on a pass/fail basis rather than with a numerical grade. A minimum of 6 correct answers out of 10 is required to pass the test.
The laboratory experiences will first be addressed from a theoretical point of view with lectures. The laboratory activities will be interactive, and students will be encouraged to discuss the results obtained, to exchange views with the teacher and other students, and to express different points of view on the theoretical and practical concepts of the course. The laboratory exercises will consist of real experiments and will provide students with the opportunity to gain practical experience on the concepts illustrated during the lectures
