The course is part of the Master in Science and Technology of Bio and Nanomaterials and runs in the first semester of the first year. The course aims at giving students the first rudiments on nanotechnology, describing the various facets of the theme: structural and functional properties derived from nanodimensions, integration of nanostructures into devices and their operating principles. Specific examples will be given about application of nanostructures in operating devices.
During the course, the students will learn the fundamental principles of nanotechnology science, from the point of view of both preparation of nanomaterials and integration of nanomaterials into devices, included the operating principles of a few model devices.

The student will be trained in identifying fields and applications, in which nanotechnology can offer improved functionalities, compared to conventional materials. They will also be instructed on the processes and phenomena, which make the nanomaterials successful in terms of performance of the final device.
Thanks to the knowledge and understanding of the content of the course, the students will be able to identify presently available technologies for preparation of nanostructured materials and their integration into devices.
The basic knowledge of solid state physics, materials science and inorganic chemistry are the prerequisite to attend the course.
Two examples of nanostructures: quantum dots and nanowires.
Quantum dots: electronic structure, optical and optoelectronic properties. Excitonic processes in quantum dots. Processes of charge dissociation, transport and recombination in composite systems based on quantum dots.
Nanowires: methods for the synthesis of nanowires of various composition. Optical, electronic and optoelectronic properties of nanowires. Charge transport properties of nanowires. Waveguiding in nanowires.
Electronic and optoelectronic devices. Schottky diode. P-n junction. Light emitting diode. Single junction and multi junction solar cell.

The students will submit a lab report, do presentation and undergo oral examination at the end of the course.
The course will be based on laboratory sessions. Lab attendance is mandatory to pass the course. In the lab, concepts closely related to the ones described in class will be experimentally tested.

Accessibility, Disability and Inclusion

Accommodation and support services for students with disabilities and students with specific learning impairments:
Ca’ Foscari abides by Italian Law (Law 17/1999; Law 170/2010) regarding support
services and accommodation available to students with disabilities. This includes students with mobility, visual, hearing and other disabilities (Law 17/1999), and specific learning impairments (Law 170/2010). In the case of disability or impairment that requires accommodations (i.e., alternate testing, readers, note takers or interpreters) please contact the Disability and Accessibility Offices in Student Services: disabilita@unive.it.
