Part of the core teaching in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management, the course is designed for students enrolled in the curricula "Art History" and "Archaeology". As a rule, the students enrolled in the curricula “Performative Arts” and “ Arts Management” cannot be admitted in this course: another one, with different program, is dedicated to them.

This teaching unit is part of a 12-credit course, together with "FUNDAMENTALS OF CONSERVATION AND MANAGEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE, IIa" (FT0451-1). These two units are subject to a single written examination divided into two phases, often scheduled on different days, but rated and recorded in a single grade.

It is not possible to take one unit in the course for letters M-Z and another in the course for letters A-L. As a general rule, please attend the two units to which each participant has been assigned on the basis of her/his surname.

Further information about the registration and publication of the score will be provided in the "Notices" of the instructor's institutional web pages and during the first class.

- Knowledge and understanding of the main non-digital art techniques (painting, sculpture, basic elements of graphics), their materials and processes.

- Understanding of the most common conservation problems raised by the art media discussed.

- Ability to properly use the vocabulary of art techniques and conservation.

- Ability to describe and compare the making process of artifacts and highlight its significance with respect to several disciplines.
The course is addressed to second-year students and gives for granted the notions that can be acquired in the first-year courses.
The course is held in Italian and in-person. It offers a survey on the art materials, techniques and procedures adopted for the creation of paintings (wall painting and on a movable stand), sculpture and prints. It will address significant examples of the relationship between media and forms of use, art materials and geographic-environmental factors, technical choices and formal preferences. Il will discuss exemplary cases of conservation.

The acquisition of the knowledge and skills covered by the first unit (Prof. Ventra) and the second unit (Prof. Cupperi) will be verified by means of two tests (one per unit). The tests will be held preferably on different days, but will be considered as a single examination with a single mark and only one possibility of acceptance (or rejection), relative to the overall mark. No partial marks that can be re-used in subsequent sessions will be provided any more: if a candidate does not appear for both examinations and does not successfully pass both, he/she will have to re-sit the examination. Candidates may earn a maximum of 15.5 points for each of the two modules.

The final exam (75 minutes) consists of closed-answer and open-answer questions (closed-book form). They assess the students' understanding of the topics discussed in class and considered in pdf presentations uploaded on the moodle platform. Each question will be associated with a visible score.
The final note is based 100% on the answers to the online quiz. The evaluation will consider:
- Relevance and completeness with respect to the questions
- Correctness and propriety in the use of discipline-specific language and vocabulary
- Precision
- Re-elaboration, connections

Regardless of attending or non-attending mode, in this unit the score will be graded as follows:
A. scores in the 9-10 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- sufficient knowledge and applied understanding with reference to the program;
- limited ability to collect and/or interpret data;
- sufficient communication skills, especially with respect to field terminology;
B. scores in the 11-13 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- reasonable knowledge and applied comprehension skills with reference to the program;
- fair ability to collect and/or interpret data;
- fair communication skills, especially with respect to field terminology;
C. scores in the 14-15.5 range will be awarded in the presence of:
- good or very good knowledge and applied comprehension skills with reference to the program;
- good or excellent ability to collect and/or interpret data, formulating autonomous judgments;
- fully appropriate communication skills, with respect to field terminology.

Plagiarism (copying sentences or even syntagmas from textbooks, other books, teaching materials, or online sources) implies the immediate invalidation of the proof. Exchange of information with others is not allowed during the proof.
