The course is part of the teachings that characterise the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Management (curriculum Tars) ) and provides a basic knowledge of the history of opera and musica theatre with particular reference to the 19th and 20th centuries.
Knowledge and awareness of the historical, social context and the main forms of opera from the 18th to the 20th century.
- Ability to formulate a critical judgement in relation to essential theoretical and musical texts in the history of music theatre of these periods.
- Ability to analyse by listening to and reading musical documents.
No entry requirements are requested.
During the lectures, the main lines of development and the historical context of music theatre from the 18th to the 20th century will be critically examined. Using specific examples, the course will focus on the forms of opera, its production and reception. TThe second part of the course will focus on Italian opera of the second half of the 19th century with particular reference to Giuseppe Verdi's late works.

Further critical bibliography will be given during the course.
Verification of the course preparation will be conducted by means of an oral examination. Three questions will be asked, relating to the contents of the textbooks and essays included in the programme.

Grading and assessment criteria:
The grading criteria will take into consideration the correctness and propriety in the use of theoretical lexicon (30%), the punctuality and extent of knowledge of the topics explored in depth in class and in any case learnt through the study of the exam bibliography (30%); the ability to critically elaborate the knowledge acquired to the case studies presented from time to time (30%), without forgetting a focus on the care of oral exposition (10%).

Grades in bands 18-22 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach a sufficient level; grades in bands 23-26 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach a fair level; grades in bands 27-30 will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach an excellent level; honours will be awarded where the aforementioned points reach an excellent level.
Frontal lessons integrated with readings, musical examples and guided listening.

During the first lesson the assessment methods and the structure of the course will be presented. Attendance is recommended.
