The course will be based on current Anglo-Saxon interpretations of classical philosophers (e.g., how Anglo-Saxons read Dante, Aristotle's political theories related to modern issues, etc.), the study of contemporary Anglo-Saxon philosophers (e.g., Fukuyama and Chomsky) and today's philosophical issues (e.g., ethics, questions of culture and identity, the "trolley dilemma" communication with other worlds, and others, time and preferences permitting).
The course is amply devoted to the practice of discussion and organized debate, being a relatively short course. However writing practice will be offered to those wishing to benefit from it, on a voluntary basis.
Minimum level: B2 CEFR as specified in the university regulations concerning admittance to the magistrale.
Study of texts and accompanying video material, free discussion, organized debates and essay writing techniques.
Material on Moodle: excerpts of recent articles and video documents.
Orale and written:
Oral: In-class prepared debate on one of the suggested topics or others of thte students' choice. for those who choose to do this. The debates are based on current philosophical questions or on new intrpretations of older philosophers or philosophical movements.
Students not having participated in a debate will take an oral on tthe course material immediately after the written during the exam session.
Written: All will take a short test on the appointed exam day which consists in a comment or analysis of an element of a text studied during the course.
Students are to prepare each text before coming to class in order to facilitate direct discussion and debate. Oral participation is free and encouraged. Debates will be organized by group. The material will be analyzed and discussed in class. Voluntary essay practice will also be offered.
