The course of GERMAN LANGUAGE 3 aims to consolidate a number of specific features and complex structural properties of contemporary German as well as its similarities with and differences to Italian (contrastive approach).

A focus is put on word-formation processes, the use of determiners, pronouns and modal particles, the German counterparts of Romance verbal/aspectual periphrases, the cooperative inflection within the German noun phrase, the topological structure of the sentence as well as the different forms and functions of subordinate clauses.
Competence in forming complex phrases and sentences according to the context
Competence in using syntactic structures appropriate to the communicative situation
Competence in translating parts of texts from Italian to German
Competence in evaluating different solutions of translation in an autonomous way and competence in discussing alternatives with adequate communicative ability
The required starting level is B2+ for receptive abilities and B2 as far as productive abilities are concerned.
Successfully passed exams of GERMAN LANGUAGE 1 and GERMAN LANGUAGE 2.
Complex morphological and syntactic structures such as derivatives and compounds (including linking elements), determiners (especially the use of definite, indefinite and null article), pronominal reference, the use of modal particles, Italian verbal/aspectual periphrases and their translations to German, cooperative inflection and tendency to mono-inflection in the noun phrase of contemporary German, scrambling in the German middlefield, implicit and explicit subordination as well as lexical collocations.

Exercises in translating from Italian to German as a didactic instrument.

The learning success is verified by a written exam only (for students who do not attend the lessons) or by a written exam and two pieces of homework during the semester (for students who attend the lessons) that test the acquired competence, the autonomy of judgment and the communicative capacity of the candidate on the basis of the correctness, situational adequacy and adherence to the relevant text style of a short commented translation from Italian to German.

=> The final written exam contains two parts:
1) a commented translation of an Italian text into German (60 minutes); with bilingual and/or monolingual dictionary
2) a test of text comprehension and writing (150 minutes); with monolingual dictionary
Exercises and discussions of examples of translations in context
Use of parallel corpora
