This course is meant for students who have chosen the track of study “Iberian and Ibero-American Studies” in the Master Degree Program in "European, American and Postcolonial Languages and Literatures and “Americas” in the Master Degree Program in Comparative International Relations. It tries to analyze Brazil and Portugal from a social and cultural perspective, collaborating in the construction of specific historical skills for the students. Specically, it intend to offer a glance on the cultural process that participated in the construction, rebuilding and invention of the two States, and on the different facets of their identities. In this way, the course seeks to broaden the student skills in the analysis of the transformations in the intellectual debate in the lusophone world in the last two centuries, with regard to the narratives/interpretations of a sense of belonging and collectivity.
- knowledge of the changes that occurred in Brazilian historiography from the 19th century to the present day;
- knowledge about the main changes that took place in the political sphere/Brazilian State during the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries;
- knowledge about the main economic transformations that occurred in Brazilian society from the 19th century to the present day.
- ability to critically analyze the production of Brazilian identities - regional and national - constructed during the 20th century.
- knowledge about the dynamics of the Brazilian population in view of international migratory phenomena;
- ability to apply the conceptual and historiographical tools studied in classes aiming to understand the current Brazilian contemporary sociocultural reality;
- know to propose and argue autonomously - in a synchronic and diachronic way.
Oral and written comprehension of Portuguese
- Brazilian historiography: intellectuals and views about Brazil;
- The construction of the State and the Brazilian economy in the 19th and 20th centuries;
- The construction of the idea of nation and Brazilian population in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries;
- Authoritarianism and democracies in the 20th century: the first government of Getúlio Vargas; “populist” governments; the Military Dictatorship and the redemocratization process;
- International migration of Brazilians abroad in the contemporary scenario.

For ALL students: Written exam, lasting a maximum of 2 hours (100% of the final grade). The student must demonstrate the ability to critically analyze the subject contents based on their readings.
To the attendants (student choice):
1. participation in written and oral training activities proposed during the semester (40%);
2. production of an essay (approximately 4000 words), agreed with the teachers during the semester, which allows for an in-depth analysis of one of the topics discussed in class. (Delivered one week before the exam) (60%).
The classes will be carried out with frontal lectures, seminars with oral presentation, texts and documents lecture laboratory, a commented screening of a movie related with the themes discussed in the course.
