Contribution of the course to the overall degree programme goals
The course aims to provide an introduction to the historical and cultural processes of the Portuguese-speaking context through the reading and analysis of stories by various Portuguese-language writers.
Expected learning outcomes
Deepen the theoretical knowledge of the story and verify its importance in postcolonial Portuguese-language literature; deal with the “theories of difference” in an articulated way with other concepts on intercultural relations, addressing themes such as inclusion and exclusion; prejudice or stereotype; identity and otherness, resistance and resilience.
Provide means for comparative reflection on the historical path of Portugal, Mozambique and Brazil.

Antonio Tabucchi, a great Italian writer and scholar of Portuguese language and literature, in 2008, commented on a definition of a figure that could characterize the twentieth century: uneasiness, demonstrating how this could take various forms, especially after the Second World War. This course is dedicated to Portuguese language literatures from the last quarter of the twentieth century to the first decades of our century. The course intends to examine and comment on some uneasiness in the various Portuguese-speaking communities and how they have been articulated in their sociocultural contexts. Stories by writers from different Portuguese-speaking areas will be analyzed and interpreted, at least Portugal, Mozambique, Brazil and Macao.
The course will be divided into five parts; one of these will be dedicated to discussing this writing modality that is the story and its role in Portuguese language literature. Furthermore, it is intended to address the notion of restlessness other than ideas about difference, otherness, stereotype and resilience. The other four parts will be dedicated to the works of each writer studied and the literary systems related to them. Among the writers, works by Guimarães Rosa, Kaká Werà; Conceição Evaristo; Lidia Jorge, Cardoso Pires, Mia Couto, Paulina Chiziane, Fernanda Dias will be studied.

Assessment methods
The final written exam has 6 questions (5 points each) and must be handwritten, made between 3 or 4 pages (about half a page for each question). It must be a personal commentary that shows how to intertwine the various points of the study, in order to verify the depth of the topic developed and its connection with the entire content of the course (debate, bibliography and lessons). For those who have done the creative work, it is enough to answer 4 questions.
Evaluation criteria.
The evaluation will take into consideration the ability to critically use specific literature (30%), use concepts appropriately (15%), arrange data correctly (15%), the ability to analyze the literary text (30%) and originality (10%).
