The course aims to give the students a general knowledge of the main historical processes that characterised contemporary history from 1789 to today. The course will moreover introduce some historical methodologies and conceptual issues.
The expected learning results are the following:

- knowledge and critical analysis of the main political, socio-economic, and cultural processes of contemporary history;
- transfer of this historical knowledge to the understanding of the present-day world;
- ability to autonomously and critically analyse scientific literature and historical sources;
- improvement of the communication skills.
A basic knowledge of modern and contemporary history.
The course will introduce the students to contemporary European history, focusing on processes like nations and nationalisms, social classes, mass societies and public policies, globalisation. The course will scrutinise the evolution and tensions among these processes and how these interactions shaped the history of European societies in the last two centuries. Even if the course is mainly focused on European history, it will also cover the links and transfers between Europe and the rest of the world, i.e., on crucial issues such as colonialism and decolonisation, the Cold War, and the globalisation.
The students who attend classes will study the following chapters:

Tommaso Detti, Giovanni Gozzini, Storia Contemporanea 1. L’Ottocento (Milano: Mondadori, 2000 o edizioni successive): chapters 1-7; 11-12; 16.

Tommaso Detti, Giovanni Gozzini, Storia Contemporanea II. Il Novecento (Milano: Mondadori, 2002 o edizioni successive): chapters 1-3; 6-8; 11-13; 17-18; 21.

The students who cannot attend classes will study the whole abovementioned handbooks.

It is recommended to both categories of students to check the materials uploaded on the moodle platform (https://moodle.unive.it/ ).
Written exam (90 minutes) on all topics covered by textbooks, including the materials uploaded on the moodle.
Lectures and in-class discussions based on historical sources and/or multimedia documents.
