The course is one of the basic activities for the Bacherol's programme in Language, Civilisation and the Science of Language; it is strongly recommended for the students attending the Interantiona Politics curriculum.The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic tools of comparative linguistic analysis and to examine how language is used in different communicative contexts. Students will learn to reflect on the properties of their mother tongue (Italian) with particular regard to Phonetics and Phonology, Morphology and Syntax, Semantics and Pragmatics. The linguistic metacompetence developed in this course will consolidate skills in reflecting on stuctures and use of the Italian language and provide students with a solid foundation for a reflective acquisition of foreign languages..
1. Knowledge and understanding:
The students know the foundations of human language and its functions.
The students know the basic linguistic terminology and understand the texts that use it.
The students know the articolatory properties of language sounds.
The students know the phonetic and phonological system of Italian also in a comparative perspective.
The students know word formation processes and basic syntactic structures.
The students know the basic notions of semantics and linguistic pragmatics

2. Applying knowledge and understanding:
The students are able to use the linguistic terminology correctly, at all stages of application of the acquired knowledge.
The students are able to analyze the phonological system of the Italian language
The students are able to analyse word structures and recognise mechanisms of derivation.
The students are able master the basic principles of syntactic analysis.
The students are able to analyze the semantic and pragmatic value of simple texts.

3. Making judgments:
The students will be able to formulate simple hypotheses, and to argument their judgement with empirical evidence.

4. Communication:
The students are able to transfer their reflection capacity on a number of linguistic phenomena with appropiate terminology.
The studens are able to to argument critically and respectfully with the peers and with the teacher.

5. Learning skills:
The students are able to take notes effectively and to share them with the peers in a collaborative form.
The students are able to consult the references in the syllabus and in the virtual classroom.

30-item written test. Students who have passed the test (at least 60% of the score) can have access to the oral part of the exam. Both parts are considered for the final assessment. Marks from 18 to 22 correspond to a pass level; from 23 to 26 good; from 27 to 30 cum laude very good/excellent
Class lectures. Exercise classes (materials will be available on the Moodle web page of the course). Partecipation to both lessons and exercise classes is highly encouraged
