This first module of the course is designed to provide the student with a comprehensive view of the principles and practices of business management. It is structured to represent a concise framework that links all the main business disciplines and provides an overall perspective useful for organizing subsequent management studies.
The course's content is developed around the four "pillars" of planning, organization, management, and control of companies, with respect to which both the theoretical principles and the operational activities of managers are explored in depth. The study perspective extends to the short, medium and long term, from defining objectives to developing a strategy and its implementation. The course also investigates how companies develop and maintain a competitive advantage within an operating context that is constantly evolving and influenced by multiple political, economic, social, technological, legal and environmental factors.
This course enables students to understand:
- What the main activities underlying the functioning of companies are and how they develop;
- How managers manage business organizations in a dynamic global environment;
- How companies develop and maintain a competitive advantage;
- How managers use problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills in real-life situations.
There are no formal prerequisites for this course. However, a prior knowledge of organizational and managerial issues would facilitate the understanding of the topics discussed in class.

At every official exam date, the examination consists of an overall written test of the two modules simultaneously: "Principles of Management" (Module 1) and "International Accounting” (Module 2). The exam lasts 60 minutes in total.
The exam is written and delivered via the Moodle Platform. It consists of 30 multiple-choice questions to solve in 60 minutes. For each question, a score is attributed as follows: + 1 point if the answer is right; 0 points if no answer is provided; - 0.25 points if the answer is wrong. Honours will be granted to students who respond to all the questions correctly.
Classes combine theoretical input with problem-based discussions. They are interactive classes, and students are strongly recommended to participate actively. Regular classes will be supplemented by weekly tutorials that focus on some case studies.
EXAM ENROLMENT PROBLEMS. If students experience problems enrolling online for the exam, they must send an email to the lecturer or to the Economics Campus before the closing date of exam enrolment. Students are not admitted to the exam if they are not enrolled online, and they are not admitted to the exam after the closing date of exam enrolment online.
