The objective of the mathematics for decision sciences course is to provide a common logical-mathematical language, in addition to the fundamental notions of calculus, financial mathematics and linear algebra. The course topics represent essential analytical tools for addressing the theoretical aspects and solving the managerial problems that will be presented in subsequent teachings in the business, economic and quantitative sectors of the course of study. In this second part of the mathematics course we will deal with multivariable functions, linear algebra and notions of financial mathematics. Agli studenti è consigliato di partecipare regolarmente alle lezioni e alle esercitazioni del corso, alle attività di tutorato e agli approfondimenti proposti tramite la piattaforma Moodle.
Students acquire the ability to correctly use the tools of calculation and optimization to address mathematical problems and in future studies of economic problems. Through the study and discussion of examples and exercises and application cases, students learn to contextualize their knowledge in the field of management science.

Detail of the expected learning outcomes:

A) Knowledge and understanding:
Understand the meaning of multivariate function
Know the main calculation techniques for two-variable functions.
Understand the basics of financial mathematics.
Know the main operations between matrices and the forms of representation of a linear system.

B) Application of knowledge and understanding:
Be able to calculate simple derivatives and integrals.
Solve simple optimization problems in one or two variables, even with constraints.
Solve basic exercises in classical financial mathematics.
Set up and solve systems of linear equations using different techniques.
Apply the knowledge acquired to study and understand economic and managerial examples.

C) Judgment ability:
Improve the ability to use formal language, make logical deductions and develop rigorous rational reasoning.
Improve the ability to formalize a problem, solve it and interpret the solution in relation to the original managerial problem.

D) Communication skills
Know how to communicate in concise language, using appropriate terminology and in a timely manner.
The mathematical topics covered in secondary school courses are taken for granted, such as algebraic rules; fractions; powers; inequalities; absolute value. The functions of one variable must be known (linear, power, exponential, logarithmic)
The topics will be the follow:
- Functions of several variables
- Systems of linear equations
- Matrices
-Elements of Financial Maths
Essential Mathematics for Economic Analysis di Knut Sydsaeter, Peter Hammond, Arne Strom

Notes from classroom activities, slides and other activities will be available on the Moodle website.
The exam is written and includes exercises and theoretical questions with the aim of verifying that students have acquired the concepts presented during the lessons, are familiar with the calculation techniques, and have learned the theoretical results in order to use this knowledge and skills in solving the problems. assigned exercises. Exam simulations will be carried out during the course and shared on the Moodle website.

No electronic instruments, notes or books are permitted in the exam tests. Registration for the exams is mandatory.

During the course, intermediate tests may be assigned which can be assessed as a supplement to or replacement of the exam.
Frontal instruction and group activity.
