The course is counted among the formative activities of History of Philosophy of the Bachelor's degree in Philosophy. As such the course aims to provide a critical knowledge of the main philosophical topics and issues in their historical development and in their connections with other disciplines and fields of research (Psychology, Human Sciences, Educational Science, Art). Within this framework, the course aims to provide 1) a deep knowledge of the main authors, works and philosophical orientations of Ancient thought; 2) the ability of contextualizing, analyzing and critically interpreting sources of different kinds; 3) the lexical and conceptual tools necessary to the study of the history of classical philosophy and to the acquisition of good communicative skills .
At the end of the course students are expected :
1) to know and understand :
- the authors, the works and the main topics concerning the history of the ancient philosophy and their cultural context.
- the terminology appropriate to this field of study
2) to apply their knowledge to the analysis of ancient texts; to discuss in a pertinent and argumentative way philosophical and exegetical questions;
3) to present in written and oral form the acquired contents of the course.
There are no prerequisites for the attendance of the course.
The teaching is divided into two parts. In this first module, Plato's philosophy will be introduced and deepened through the analysis and commentary of the Timaeus. Through the reading and commentary of the most relevant passages of the dialogue, the following themes will be addressed: the status of the work in the Platonic corpus and in Plato's philosophy; dramatic context and characters, the proem and dialectical principles; analogical models; the status of the verisimilitude narrative; the operations of the intelligence; the model of the universe; the construction of the cosmos; the soul of the cosmos; the generation of time; the immortal soul; necessity; matter and physical bodies; the generation of man; the ethical implications of Platonic cosmology (virtue, vice, assimilation to god).

The examination will be written and will consist of 6 questions designed to ascertain the historical-philosophical understanding of the topics covered, the ability to analyse ancient texts, the acquisition of specialised vocabulary and logical-argumentative ability.
