CONTEMPORARY HISTORY I

The course is among the Core Educational Activities of the Bachelor's degree course in Conservation of Cultural Heritage and Performing Arts Manageme; this course, held by prof. Zazzara, with the program that appears detailed on this page, is reserved for students who follow the curriculum in History of Art. The aim of the course is to provide knowledge of the general lines of XXth century history.

Knowledge and Understanding:
- knowledge of facts and processes characterizing 20th century history on a global scale
- knowledge of some of the major sources for the study of contemporary history
- understanding of the importance of political and social history for the study of art history
- understanding of the importance of contemporary history for the independent and critical formation of political opinions

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
- know how to place major events of contemporary history in the timeline
- to distinguish between political, social and cultural phenomena and between different historical actors
- being able to distinguish conceptually between history and historiography, between memory and history, between facts and representations

Judgment Skills:
- being able to apply knowledge of historical facts and concepts to the formation of independent judgments, including reflection on social, scientific, ethical, and political issues

Communication Skills:
- being able to make connections between history and art history
- being able to participate in class discussion with the teacher and peers, asking questions or expressing opinions in a respectful manner toward others

Knowledge of the general frameworks of modern and contemporary history acquired in high school.

The course will provide the general outlines of 20th century international history, in its political, social and economic aspects.

To take di exam, students are requested to study a university textbook on 20th century contemporary history.
The suggested textbook is:

Students may alternatively make use of:

Other readings or sources presented and discussed during the lessons and helpful for exam preparation will be made available on Moodle.

The examination consists of two parts.

The first consists of a test of 35 closed-ended questions on the contents of the textbook. The test will take place via Moodle and will last 45 minutes.
The minimum threshold for passing the test is 20 correct answers.

The second consists of writing a short paper (minimum 3000, maximum 5000 characters including spaces) in the form of a comment on a 20th century art work (chosen by the student) from the point of view of its links with the political, social and cultural history of the contemporary era.
The paper must be uploaded to the appropriate section of Moodle by the day on which the student takes the first test. The paper is graded on a scale of 1 to 3 and contributes to the final grade with the test.

Lectures and class discussion. Class attendance is recommended to guide and support students in their study of the textbook.
