Teaching is one of the basic training activities of the master's degree course in Sustainable Chemistry and Technologies. The course allows students to acquire knowledge and understanding of topics related to some processes of the chemical industry and in particular of the oil and natural gas industry. Particular attention is given to the catalyzed processes and to the study of the different catalysts.
The student will have the opportunity to tackle some industrial / technological problems and will be encouraged i) to use logical and deductive reasoning in solving these problems; ii) develop the ability to argue scientific reasoning; iii) develop the ability to deepen a topic and expose it through a presentation in ppt in an appropriate technical-scientific language.
1. Knowledge and understanding of:
a) processes of transformation of oil and natural gas into fuels and chemicals;
b) the main processes for production of sulfuric acid, methanol, and derivative products;
c) fuel production processes
d) Basic concepts of catalysis
e) Knowledge on the synthesis and characterization of heterogeneous catalysts
f) photocatalytic processes

2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
a) to Know how to use the knowledge to solve technological problems in a logical and deductive way;
b) to Know how to carry out a literature research and to know how to present a specific topic by a ppt presentation.

3. Ability to judge
a) to know how to evaluate comparatively the effectiveness of different Technologies;
b) to develop a preliminary critical capacity on the effectiveness of some processes and on the choices of catalysts.

4. Communication skills
a) to know how to use an appropriate vocabulary and a suitable technical-scientific symbolism;
b) to interact positively with the teacher and with the classmates, formulating coherent questions and arguing alternative hypotheses.

5. Learning skills
a) to Know how to be autonomous in carrying out literature screenings
b) to be able to take notes, selecting the important aspects of scientific reasoning and collecting information according to their importance and priority.
Basic knowledge of Organic Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry 1, and catalysis
The chemical industry: introduction and general characteristics, overview of the most important chemicals, profits and production costs. Chemicals from oil and natural gas. Oil: origin, composition and distillation of crude oils, additives for gasolines. Oil refining reactions: thermal cracking, catalytic cracking, reforming, hydrotreating.
Treatments and separation of the natural gas.
Production of sulfuric acid: raw materials, production process.
Production of methanol, formaldehyde synthesis from methanol, MTBE production (methyl terbutylether). Industrial catalysts: nature of the catalytic and descriptive phenomenon of the catalysts used in the processes described above. Photocatalysis . Synthesis (Precipitation, impregnation, ion exchange....and characterization of a heterogeneous catalyst (TPR; TPO; TPD; PHYSI AND CHEMISORPTION of gases)
There are also some hours dedicated to the didactic laboratory, a lesson held by an industry expert and a visit to an industrial plant is planned.

The assessment of learning takes place by an oral test. The final grade will take into account the esults achieved in the oral exam and the evaluation of laboratory experiences. During the oral examination the student must demonstrate that they know the topics covered during the course and that they are able to present them in a formal way. To pass the exam, the following are required: active participation in the lessons and obviously knowledge of the topics covered during the course.Evaluation of the reports relating to the experimental activity with ratings A, B, C and D and E (A 30-28, B 27-25, C 24-22, D 21-18, E < 18 to be redone before the oral exam) . If the reports have an A grade, the oral grade is raised by one or 2 points, if B by 1 if C by 0 if D -1.
Lectures in the classroom with power point presentations, some lessons will be dedicated to the integration of the lesson through power point exposure by the students with consequent discussion of the topic. In the "moodle" platform of the University, educational material will be inserted. Some hours will be held in the laboratory to show students in practice what has been studied.
