Expected learning outcomes
I) Knowing the metal-ligand interactions and understanding the influence of the ligands on the electronic structure of the metal centres.
II) Knowing the relationships between the electronic structure of the metal centres and the geometry of the coordination compounds.
III) Understanding the relationships between complex structure and spectroscopic and magnetic properties.
IV) Understanding the reactivity of the transition elements as a function of the electronic structure and of the coordination sphere.
V) Knowing the problems related to the extraction and use of the transition elements.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding.
I) Being able to use the concepts learned to foresee and logically interpret the chemical-physical properties of a complex.
II) Being able to propose coherent and feasible syntheses of coordination compounds.
III) Being able to frame a process linked to a transition element in terms of sustainability.
3. Ability to judge
I) Being able to evaluate the effects induced by changes in the electronic configuration of metal centres and in the coordination sphere.
II) Being able to recognize the basic elements determining the stability of a complex, so as to recognize similarities and differences between coordination compounds.

I) Being able to use the appropriate scientific-technical terminology and symbols to discuss the course contents.
II) Being able to interact constructively with the teacher and with the other students.

I) Being able to synthesize in an autonomous way the salient aspects of the concepts expressed in class.

III) Being able to apply the theoretical concepts learned in the inorganic synthesis laboratory.

I) Introductory remarks on transition elements and coordination compounds.
II) Crystal field theory applied to various geometries with insights.
III) Jahn-Teller distortion.
IVI) Magnetism of transition metal compounds.
V) Absorption and emission, Tanabe-Sugano diagrams.
VI) Molecolar orbitals theory applied to d-block complexes.
VII) Metal-metal bonds and metallic cluster.
VIII) Laboratory: Synthesis and characterization of coordination compounds in relation to the theoretical contents of the course. Conductimetry, spectroscopic (IR, UV-VIS, PL, NMR) and magnetic characterization of transition metal complexes.

Assessment methods
- knowledge and understanding of the program: the depth and breadth of acquired knowledge will be evaluated, as well as the ability to apply it to practical situations;
- analytical and critical thinking skills: the ability to organize and interpret data, formulate independent judgments, and support one's arguments will be evaluated;
- communication skills: clarity of expression and the use of appropriate terminology will be evaluated.
Marks will be assigned based on the level of achievement of these criteria, as indicated below:
- 18-22: satisfactory level;
- 23-26: adequate level;
- 27-30: good to very good level;
- 30 cum laude: excellence in all criteria.
