The course offers an approach to general themes in modern history through a comparative European-wide approach.
Familiarization with debates, events and experiences regarding Europe in the 19th and 20th centuries, interpretation of texts, analysis of contexts.
A general knowledge of historical events, especially political and cultural events, in Europe between the 19th and the 20th centuries
After Totalitarianism: experience and memory of fascisms in Germany, Italy, France
Following a syntetic analysis of the experience of fascism in Europe, we will examine several intellectuals who left a mark on the debate on fascist totalitarianism after the Second world war
For students attending and not-attending classeses, the following readings are mandatory

- Enzo Traverso, A ferro e fuoco. La guerra civile europea (1914-1945), Il Mulino 2008 (also available in English translation);
- Enzo Traverso, Auschwitz e gli intellettuali. La Shoah nella cultura del dopoguerra, Il Mulino 2004 (also available in English translation);
- Simon Levis Sullam, I fantasmi del fascismo. Le metamorfosi degli intellettuali italiani nel dopoguerra, Feltrinelli 2021.
Oral exam on the bibliogaphy for attending and not-attending students: an adequate knowledge of the assigned texts is required.
