Ariosto's "Furioso" and the French romance
The subject of the lectures will be an intertextual analysis of the "influence" of the techniques of the French prose novel on L. Ariosto's poem, through the comparative reading of selected episodes.
The course is connected with the annual seminar 'Time and Action in the Romance of Chivalry'.

- chivalric literature (France, 12th-13th centuries; Italy, 14th-15th centuries).
Skills
- Strengthening passive competence in ancient French (morphosyntax, prose stylistics) and active competence in comparative analysis of Romance languages and textual analysis (with particular reference to the modes of argumentative rhetoric).
Basic knowledge of Old French, Latin and Medieval History.
Theory of intertextuality; cultural history of the Italian and French Late Middle Ages; comparative reading of Italian and French texts.
Texts and bibliography will be provided during the lessons, and made available on the Moodle platform.
The learning assessment will take place through an oral test, based on translation and commentary of texts
Translation exercises; stylistic and narrative structure analysis.

During the year, a seminar will be held, open to students of the bachelor programme, to students of the graduate programme and to anyone interested: "Time and action in the chevaleresque romance". The seminar will be hold in two parts, in both the terms; active attendance (translation exercises, interventions at the seminar, etc.) will entitle 3 credits of activity equivalent to a stage. Information on dates and times will be provided at the beginning of the 2024-2025 courses.
