ITALIAN PHILOLOGY

The course is included in the core educational activities of the Master's Degree Programme in Philology, Linguistics and Italian Literature.
It aims to provide the students with the aware use of the philological method and the ability to elaborate critically the bibliography on a specific theme or discussion.

By the end of the course the student will be able to:
- read critically a Medieval and Renaissance Italian text, noticing linguistic, metrical and stylistic peculiarities;
- take advantage of the philological method in order to orient himself to a rich manuscript tradition;
- read consciously a critical edition, judging editor's chioses and discussing the alterative solutions suggested by the critics;
- work indipendently on seminar themes.

To have achieved the educational objectives of Principles of Philology. Foreigners attending this course are expected to be fluent in Italian and to have a good knowledge of the Italian literature (in particular Medieval and Renaissance period).

Domenico Venier's "Libro chiuso"

The course will focus on Domenico Venier's Venetian rhymes, contained almost exclusively in codex British Library, Add. 12197. The codex contains a rich exchange of erotic-oscene-themed poems between Domenico Venier and Benetto Corner, and takes the form of a book insulting the woman loved by the two. The texts will be framed within the landscape of poetry in Venetian of the mid-sixteenth century, also examining poems by other earlier and coeval poets, such as Andrea Calmo and Maffio Venier.
Students will be invited to take part in a seminar activity.

Oral exam. The examination will verify the knowledge of the theoretical problems discussed in class and of the bibliography. The student will also be asked to read and explain a passage of the texts.
A. To achieve a grade between 18 and 22, students must demonstrate:
- acceptable but cursory knowledge of the programme;
- limited text analysis and argumentation skills during the oral exam;
- an expression that is not always appropriate;
B. To achieve a grade between 23 and 26, students must demonstrate:
- decent knowledge of the programme;
- decent text analysis and argumentation skills during the oral exam;
- correct use of the language, even if with some imprecisions in the use of the technical language of the discipline;
C. To achieve a grade between 27 and 30 cum laude, students must demonstrate:
- good or excellent knowledge of the programme;
- good or excellent analysis and argumentation skills during the oral exam;
- perfect use of the language.
