The course is placed among the disciplines of the Master’s degree course in Italian Philology, Linguistics and Literature. Its purpose is to deepen the critical knowledge of Italian literature from the 17th to 18th century and that of the fundamental tools for textual interpretation, so as to provide students with the necessary skills to contextualize the authors examined, to analyze the texts to rhetorical and stylistic level and achieve the capacity to interpret them in a reasonably autonomous way.
By the end of this course the student will have acquired extensive knowledge and advanced skills in the methodological field related to the Italian literature of the Ancient Regime in his relations with contemporary culture, and a developed awareness of the plurality of critical-methodological approaches to the text. In fact, it is expected to be able to understand, to analyze and to interpret the literary texts object of the course with the appropriate methods and tools, to identify and to examine themes, topics and ideas developed by the treated authors, to organize the contents in appropriate synthesis.
To adequately follow the lessons the student must have a good knowledge of the Italian language, learn about the historical development of Italian literature of medieval and humanistic-Renaissance age.
Foscolo and the poetic turning point of 1802-1803.
The transition from the Sonnets and Odes to the "Sepolcri" and the "Grazie" testifies to a new poetic approach in Foscolo's itinerary. Faced with Napoleonic authoritarianism, which prevented political ac-tion, Foscolo drew on the most prestigious models of the classical tradition, proposing a reflection on man, on the laws that regulate civil life and on the role of letters in society.
The texts analyzed in class will be uploaded on the University’s “Moodle” e-learning platform.
We recommend reading U. Foscolo, "Le poesie", edited by M. Palumbo, Bur, 2010 (or other economical editions: "Rime", edited by M. Cerruti, Feltrinelli, 2019; "Sepolcri-Odi-Sonetti", edited by D. Martinelli, Mondadori, 2019).
Critical Bibliography:
P. Frare, "Una lirica nuova, cioè antica: Foscolo dalle «Poesie» ai «Sepolcri»", in G. Baldassarri, P. Zambon (eds.), "Le forme della tradizione lirica", Il Poligrafo, 2012, pp. 159-177 (https://www . acade-mia.edu/23734681/Una_poesia_nuova_cioè_antica_Foscolo_dalle_Poesie_ai_Sepolcri);
C. Del Vento, "La «nuova poetica» foscoliana (1803-1816)", Edizioni ETS, 2023, pp. 17-102.
