The course is among the activities characterizing the modern and contemporary curriculum of the master's degree course in Italian Philology and Literature; it is also part of the related and supplementary activities for the medieval and renaissance curriculum of the same degree course and for the master's degree course in History from the Middle Ages to the Contemporary Age.

The course aims to provide students with broad and in-depth knowledge as well as specialized methodological skills in the field of Italian Literature from the early twentieth century to the 2000s; it also aims to increase awareness of the plural critical-methodological approaches with which a text can be interpreted, 'approaching' it also through comparison with other texts, not necessarily coeval, in awareness of the inescapable dialectic, in literary history, between past and present.
1. Knowledge
- to deepen knowledge of twentieth-century Italian literature in its relations with the coeval cultural context and in its intertextual relations with other works, including those of the past;
- refine methodological knowledge related to strategies of literary text analysis.

2. Skills
- in awareness of the variety of possible methodological-interpretive options, autonomously apply effective strategies of analysis, calibrated to the peculiarities of the texts treated;
- to be able to elaborate orally and in writing, mastering the specialized vocabulary, a personal, philologically and critically grounded commentary on literary texts;
- to make the literary text dialogue with other texts and with other epochs, in a comparative and multidisciplinary perspective.
Good knowledge of the history of Italian literature (of authors and their major works).
Excellent knowledge of the Italian language.

- Montale and the literary tradition of Italy.

The essays by Giorgio Zampa and Niccolò Scaffai introducing the two collections mentioned above will be considered for general background.
Specific bibliographical indications, concerning the texts and themes gradually addressed, will be provided in itinere, in class, and communicated on Moodle.
A term paper (about 20,000 characters in length) focusing on a text, of the student's choice, not included among those covered in class is required. Ongoing discussions will be held on these papers in seminar mode.
