The course will offer students a package of fundamental knowledge in the field of sedimentology and geomorphology. Particular attention will be devoted to the formative processes of archaeological stratification. These skills are fundamental at all levels of archaeological research, and represent the ideal complement to the basic methodological training of young archaeologists.
Students will acquire a greater awareness of the intrinsic characteristics of the stratification, learning to observe elements that, by training, would be led to leave in the background compared to the so-called cultural characteristics of the sequences. Furthermore, students will be able to ask themselves new questions, both in relation to their training and the research they decide to undertake. They will also approach the world of archaeometry, coming into contact with the professionalism that they will have to resort to in the rest of their career.
No prerequisites are required.
The following topics will be addressed:
- definition of sediment and deposit;
- definition of stratigraphic unit;
- laws of archaeological and geological stratigraphy;
- stratigraphic relations;
- formative processes;
