ITALIAN LITERATURE 1 MOD. I

This class, among the "field modules" in the bachelor’s degree in Humanities, curriculum in Science of the Literary Text and Communication, is meant to furnish students not only with basic knowledge of the main trends of Italian literature, but moreover with the theoretical and methodological tools to face the specific problematics of the discipline. The class thus has three main objectives: to trace the development of Italian literature, by way of specific examples; to foster the capacity of autonomous reflection on a literary text; to furnish the basic methodological tools of textual analysis. Particular attention is devoted to the centrality of the text, be it poetic or prose, as an indispensable starting point in any theoretical or critical discourse.

At the end of the course, the student will learn about the historical and cultural context of the Italian liter-ary civilization of the modern age and will be able to use terminology adapted to the specificity of the discipline. Will be able to understand, analyze and interpret the literary texts subject of the course with the appropriate tools and tools, to identify and examine themes, topics and ideas developed by the authors treated, to organize the contents in appropriate summaries by making comparisons between texts, to for-mulate a reasoned judgment of value, to critically consult the reference texts and the bibliography contained therein.

To properly follow the lessons the student must have a good knowledge of the Italian language, re-knowing the formal and linguistic aspects of a literary text.

The course aims to combine a theoretical and textual approach (focusing on a specific and complex literary form) with a historical one, proceeding according to chronological coordinates, in order to offer students the broadest possible vision of Italian literary development and the issues and problems connected with it. The module aims to identify the cultural and literary lines of the various epochs (Middle Ages, Humanism, Renaissance) through a conceptual node of our literary tradition represented by the historiographical and political narrative followed in its unfolding from Dante and Petrarch to Machiavelli and Guicciardini and Sarpi.

The teaching materials commented during the lessons will be uploaded to the University’s “Moodle” e-learning platform.

Final verification of learning takes place through an oral interview lasting approximately 30 minutes.
Assessment criteria
30 cum laude (excellent): the student shows a thorough and complete knowledge of the contents; he/she is able to express a reasoned judgement on a text; he/she proceeds independently in the presentation of the arguments and in the analysis of the texts; he/she expresses him/herself with excellent argumentative competence using correct terminology.
29-30 (very good): the student demonstrates excellent knowledge of the subject; he/she analyses and interprets texts with precision and expresses him/herself with argumentative clarity.
27-28 (good): the student demonstrates broad knowledge of the content of the lessons; shows satisfactory understanding of the texts; uses precise, if sometimes schematic language.
23-26 (fair): the student shows an acceptable knowledge of the syllabus and fair ability to analyse texts, albeit with omissions; he/she expresses him/herself in a generally correct manner.
18-22 (sufficient): the student shows limited knowledge of the contents; shows uncertainties in textual analysis; exposes unclearly with generalizations and inconsistencies.
Insufficient: the student shows poor and fragmentary knowledge of the subject matter; he/she analyses texts superficially; he/she does not reach an acceptable level in the articulation of discourse.

The 12 cfu will be recorded after passing the first and second modules.

The course consists of lectures, which make use of digital tools and are supplemented by active learning methods.
