The course provides participants with theoretical instruments and case studies to understand and evaluate the relationship between management systems of cultural properties and the development of tourism systems.
An understanding of the main management systems of high-profile cultural properties with reference to tourism
Cultural heritage and tourism supply 1 or the knowledge of the convention for the protection of the world cultural and natural heritage and of the operational guidelines for its implementation.
The course discusses a series of case studies pertaining to the different UNESCO AREAS (Europe and North-America, Latin America and the Caribbean, Arab Countries, Africa, Asia and the Pacific).
Case studies discussions address:
- criteria for inscription on the WHL
- management plans
- relationship between outstanding universal value and tourism destination management
- communication and brand management
- conflicting value attributions and stakeholders
- sustainability

The test consists in the writing of a short essay - and discussion thereof - un a theme to be agreed with the teacher.
The short essay should address the management of a world heritage site with reference to its touristic relevance.
