The aim of the course is to provide the specific vocabulary useful in the tourism sector confronting with texts describing typical situations of this area and to learn the pragmatic strategies tailored to the purpose of managing relations with German customers in the tourist branch.
Expected learning outcomes, according to the Dublin descriptors:
1) Knowledge and understanding: knowledge of German (corresponding to level B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages); understanding of written texts in the field of tourism;
2) Ability to apply knowledge and understanding: ability to use language skills to produce written texts appropriate to academic and professional contexts, in particular in the tourism sector.
3) Autonomy of judgement: ability to select and use reliable sources of information written in German, such as websites dedicated to study and work in an international context; ability to deal adequately with requests made by German-speaking customers in tourism contexts; ability to select a bibliography of German texts relevant to the tourism economy.
4) Communicative skills: ability to communicate in writing by producing articulated texts in German (corresponding to level B2 of the European Framework of Reference for Languages) which may be required in the academic and working field; in oral production, ability to manage requests and situations, giving information, finding appropriate solutions in relevant contexts in the tourism sector.
5) Learning ability: to continue the consolidation of language skills in the academic and working world, both through the autonomous preparation of written texts and through the ability to manage oral communication.
Knowledge of German corresponding at least to A2 + / B1 levels is required. The attendance is free and the possession of certifications is not necessary prerequisite.
During the course, texts describing typical situations, in which operator in the tourism sector can be confronted with, will be read and analyzed. In addition to the lexical and terminological understanding, special attention will be devoted to ways of interacting with people of German culture in order to acquire adequate pragmatic competences in this field. Further, related grammatical and syntactical rules will be explained, and this is also at the requests expressed by the students themselves. The courses held by mother-tongue teachers are an integral part of the course and they will give special attention to the written and oral interaction production in typical tourist situations; the frequency of courses held by mother-tongue teachers strongly recommended and students who have scored at least 70 % of the frequency thereof will be given 1 extra point in the final evaluation.

In case of difficulty in downloading, students can contact the teacher for the pdf by email (giuliana.scotto@unive.it). Pages relevant to the examination will be selected from this text during the lectures (the relevant pages will be communicated on moodle). An integral part of the course is also a handout on the language of the pandemic, which students should request by email from the teacher and of which a few pages will be read during the lectures in order to acquire the specific vocabulary relevant to tourism in the time of the coronavirus pandemic.


NB: Students are kindly requested to bring the text with them since the first lecture. Thos who have difficulty in finding the volume (needed to profitably follow the lessons in the classroom) are requested to contact the teacher on time.
For the purposes of private study, the following grammar is also recommended: H. DREYER, R. Schmitt, Die neue Gelbe, Hueber, latest edition with explanations in Italian.
Grammar and writing tests on topics indicated during the lettorato; conversation on touristic topics; written test on touristic terminology. 4CFU students are required to contact the teacher in order to receive an ad hoc programme.

The course held by the mother-tongue teacher Dr Katia Montino's lecture is an integral part of the learning and provides the necessary knowledge to be able to follow the course. In the first semester there are two tutorial classes held by Dr. Montino and dedicated to different levels of German language proficiency. Students are strongly encouraged to attend Dr Montino first lecture class where they will be told which or which tutorial classes to attend according to level.
