This course offers students practical insights into how economic theories are tested and validated through experiments. It strengthens analytical skills and empirical understanding, which are essential for making informed decisions in economics, finance, and sustainability. The second part of the course is structured as an analysis of experimental papers relevant to various fields of economics.
By the end of this course, students will be able to understand, critically analyze and describe economic papers that focus on experiments. They will grasp the role of experimental methods in testing economic theories and be equipped to critically assess the strengths and limitations of experimental evidence. This will serve as a step toward designing and conducting meaningful experiments, as well as understanding how other areas of economics can interact with and relate to experimental economics.
The course is meant to be introductory. A working understanding of microeconomics, basic statistics and knowledge of behavioral economics is useful.
FIRST PART
- Introduction to Experimental Economics
- Design of Experiments
SECOND PART
- Some experimental Evidence on Other-Regarding Preferences, Gender economics, Information Cascades and Coordination, Public Goods Provision, Narratives, Market experiments.
(This list should be understood as a guideline outlining the major themes related to the papers that will be covered during the course. Please refer to the Moodle page for a more detailed and updated list of topics addressed)
The reference materials are provided by the instructor on the course's Moodle page and consist mainly of the papers presented and discussed in class or assigned as required readings, as well as the slides used during the lectures.
The exam format consists of a written test (which may include multiple-choice questions, True/False questions, definitions, and open-ended questions), with the possibility of partially replacing it with oral presentations of papers and assignments, at the instructor's discretion for each exam session. The specific format will be announced in advance on the course's Moodle page.
The course is organized into lectures with slides, paper discussions, and student presentations. Active participation is strongly encouraged.
