The course is inserted between the basic disciplines common to the Program of Study and aims to provide an adequate critical knowledge of Italian literature and the fundamental tools for the textual interpretation. The teaching activity aims to start an analysis historically and philologically aware of the literary texts, founded on the mastery of the technical language.
The achievement of these instructional goals allows the student to acquire the bases for an in-depth learning of the culture and society of the triennial languages developing the skills of comparison and evaluation.
Knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the Italian literary civilization; the ability to correctly use basic specialist vocabulary; to understand, analyze and interpret the literary texts covered by the course with the appropriate methods and tools, to identify and examine themes, arguments and ideas developed by the authors treated, to organize the contents in appropriate syntheses by making comparisons between the texts, to formulate a motivated value judgement.
To adequately follow the lessons the student must possess the essential lines of the history of Italian literature and easily move between the texts and the authors of greater importance, recognize the formal and linguistic aspects of a text, have a good knowledge of the Italian language written and oral.
Intertextuality in "Orlando furioso"


"Orlando Furioso" brings together all the previous poetic tradition, both classical and romantic (from French epic cycles to Provençal poetry) and its developments between Sicily and Tuscany between the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries (Sicilian poetry, stilnuovo, Dante and Petrarca). Ludovico Ariosto subjects this tradition to the lens of his demystifying irony, denouncing the dangers of literature and at the same time its fundamental cognitive function: of reality, and of how men interact with it.
The course aims to retrace some of these threads, with which the poet weaves his poem, according to a re-appropriation and assembly that was unprecedented, in terms of intent and method, in the culture of his time.
In this framework, space will also be given to Ariosto’s remodulation and demystification of the category of ‘holy war’ and of the relationships between East and West.

The exam is oral and aims to ascertain mastery of the topics covered in class, the ability to frame, understand and analyze the texts that have been presented, and knowledge of the critical bibliography indicated. The evaluation criteria respond to different levels of ability: the minimum level of correct understanding of the meanings and elements of historical-cultural contextualization of literary texts, and of a sufficient ability to analyze them through the appropriate use of the rhetorical terminology learned in the course of lessons (18-22); the level of discrete knowledge of the contents, the ability to critically reorganize them and a good competence in the exposition and analysis of texts, (23-26); finally, an excellent level, which requires in-depth knowledge of the contents, the ability to critically reorganize them, excellent competence both in the exposition of the arguments and in the use of specific rhetorical terminology (27-30). The award of honors will correspond to excellent ability regarding the same requirements.

Lectures: discussion of historical-literary and theoretical issues and analysis of texts subject to study.
