The Chinese language module 1-2 is one of the courses characterizing the Master’s Degree Programme in Languages, economics and institutions of Asia and North Africa. It aims to provide students with intermediate-advanced language tools and skills. The goal is to make them possible to apply their language skills and abilities in communicative situations and in reading/translating texts that require knowledge of sectoral languages related to the socio-political field. They will thus be able to make their linguistic competence a key tool to understand and interpret Chinese modernity in its various aspects.
Achieve a level of language proficiency equivalent to level C1- of the CEFR (Common European framework of reference for language proficiency). In particular:
1. Knowledge and understanding
• Know the key sentences necessary to interact in communication contexts that require knowledge of sectoral languages related to economic-juridical and socio-political fields.
• Have a solid knowledge of the grammatical system of modern Chinese.
• Know a lexicon of about 2350 words and 1600 characters, including terms of the economic-juridical and socio-political sectoral languages.
2. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding
• Be able to correctly use the key sentences necessary to interact in communication contexts that require knowledge of sectoral languages related to economic-juridical and socio-political fields.
• Be able to understand written texts on economic-juridical and socio-political topics.
• Be able to use a lexicon of about 2350 words and 1600 characters, including terms of the economic-juridical and socio-political sectoral languages.
• Be able to translate correctly into Chinese sentences including complex grammatical structures.
• Be able to create discipline- and industry-specific glossaries and term bases (that include expressions and collocations)
3. Judgement capacity
• Be able to assess the level of one’s language knowledge, skills and abilities, with particular reference to one's own translation process.
4. Communication skills
• Be able to communicate the specificities of linguistic and textual analysis using appropriate terminology.
5. Learning skills
• Know how to relate the different contexts of study and apply your knowledge and skills for personal and professional growth.
Before starting the course, students must:
- Have a very good theoretical and practical knowledge of the Italian language: they must be able to express themselves correctly both in writing and in oral forms, as well as master the tools of grammatical analysis and logical analysis.
- Have a Chinese language proficiency equivalent to level B2+ of the CEFR (Common European framework of reference for language proficiency).
- Have attended the lessons of Chinese language module 1-1
The course develops the understanding and the ability to translate Chinese texts on socio-political and economic-juridical topics. It also provides oral skills in the economic-juridical and socio-political fields and strengthens the ability to translate into Chinese sentences including complex grammatical structures. In particular, it offers:
• Reading comprehension and translation of Chinese texts on social issues related to, e.g., social phenomena, or sustainable development (topics will also be chosen according to students' interests): 30 hours of theory and practice;
• training towards improved interaction skills in business communication contexts, with analysis of grammar and translation problems: 60 hours of practice A (conversation);
• training in the translation of sentences into Chinese, including complex grammatical structures: 60 hours of practice B (translation);
• conversation tutoring: practice C;
• translation tutoring: practice D.

The verification of acquired abilities and skills is carried out through three tests: a test of reading comprehension and translation of a Chinese text on an issue related to the texts translated during the course as well as of the theoretical contents of the course, a conversation on an economic-juridical or socio-political topic and a Chinese translation test of sentences including complex grammatical structures. To pass the exam it is necessary to obtain a minimum mark of 18/30 in each of the three tests.
Teaching is organized in:
a) frontal instruction;
b) writing and conversation practice aimed at building and consolidating the knowledge, skills and competences necessary to meet the goal of the course;
c) tutoring aimed at discussing and clarifying specific language problems that emerged during the teaching.
