The course will provide students with a general idea of the history of Venetian glass from its ancient origins to its contemporary reality, passing through the most significant events and technical achievements that have gone on to modify the production and consequently the taste of this prestigious Venetian reality.
The student-after the 30-hour course-will be able to recognize a Venetian glass artifact by understanding its technique and style and placing it historically in its historical and social context.
The student is required to have knowledge of English and a minimum of curiosity about the subject. Students are also asked to actively intervene with questions and observations, which are always welcome and stimulate useful discussions for the whole class.
The course will focus on the production of Venetian glass from Roman times to the masters still living, passing through the great masterpieces of the Renaissance and Baroque periods that made Murano great. Special attention will also be given to the historical revival season of the 19th century.
The students can find a general support, in English here:
- Murano. Island of glass, edited by A. Dorigato, Arsenale editrice, Venice, 2013 (easy to
find in CSV – Cini Foundation or in the BAUM library).
This book will be the base on which students will prepare the exam, then each lesson will have specific bibliography to go deeper into the theme (but just for a possible personal interest of the student).
The exam will take place in the classroom and involve the recognition and description of three artifacts from among those analyzed together with the students and featured in the volume, "A. Dorigato, Murano. An Island of Glass."
written
The course will be conducted mainly by face-to-face, in-person lectures and some outings to museums or archives that specifically preserve glass or documents related to the topic.
