This class is aimed at international exchange students of Ca’ Foscari’s School for International Education and will provide them with a basic knowledge of the Italian literature and culture from the origins to the Renaissance.
Students should be able to trace the main trajectories of the history of Italian literature and culture from the origins to the Renaissance; they should know the main authors of the period and their works. Students should be able to express their knowledge resorting to a proper vocabulary.
Good knowledge of Italian language.
This class will be devoted to the development of Italian literature, from its origins to the Renaissance. It will focus on the main authors of the period, analysing their poetics, works and connections with contemporary historical and cultural contexts. Meaningful literary texts, written both in prose and in verse, will be examined and discussed in class, focusing also on the connections between literature and the arts. A final monographic module will be devoted to the Italian novella and its connection with Venice: resorting to interesting novellas, this final module will focus on some meaningful examples of love stories that are set in Venice and have renowned Venetian families as protagonists. In this way students will have access to peculiar and multifarious literary representations of both the city where they study and the people that inhabited it in previous centuries.

N.B. Students cannot attend classes or take exams if they are not officially enrolled in this course. For any information about the SIE English-taught courses for exchange students, please visit this webpage: https://www.unive.it/pag/35228/
