The teaching module Lingua e traduzione inglese 2 mod. 2 is part of the core subject area "attività formative di base" of the Degree Course in Language and Cultural Mediation and aims to enable students to acquire a solid communicative and translational competence in the English language. The contents of mod. 1 and mod. 2 are integrated and complemented to form the official course "Lingua e traduzione Inglese 2". Mod. 2 is a semester-long module which is complemented by applied, practical language lessons called "esercitazioni", which form part of the final examination. The module explores aspects of English morphology, grammar and syntax in a contrastive approach to the Italian language. Language competence will be developed at level B2 of the CEFR.
At the end of the course, students will be able to understand and produce oral and written texts in English at B2 level of CEFR; they will have acquired elementary notions of translation theory and practice and the communicative skills that will enable them to recognize and explain contrastive aspects of the grammatical and syntactical structures of Italian and English; they will be able to use the terminology of linguistics to describe the grammatical and syntactical phenomena of the English language; they will be able to interact in communicative situations at level B2 of the CEFR, in particular they will be able to present the topics dealt with in the teacher's module; they will be able to translate tourist and other non-specialised texts from English into Italian and vice-versa; they will be able to revise and improve translated texts. They will also be able to use the materials provided by their teacher independently and to self-assess the skills and competences acquired during the course.
Pre-requisites of this course are a level B1 plus of the QCER and an excellent competence of the Italian language.
This module aims to: observe and describe the grammatical and syntactical framework of contemporary English from a contrastive perspective (English-Italian). The course will examine grammatical and syntactical structures in particular and how words can be combined into larger and larger units to form phrases, sentences and texts. More specifically, the course will look at:
Grammatical and syntactical relationships between words will be explored, covering the production of individual semantic units as well as the features of sentence structure and connected speech, basic theoretical notions of discourse analysis and register will be introduced. Examples of translations will be provided and students will also practice translating and revising short, non-specialized texts.
As for the "esercitazioni" classes, students will focus on the use of the grammatical, syntactical, communicative and textual features of the English language that have been studied during the module.
