The course is included among the basic courses of the Bachelor's degree in Literature and in History and it is characterized by objectives and teaching methods consistent with the Geography I course (Surnames M-Z).
The course addresses the diversity, socio-economic and cultural, of the geographical spaces as a product of adaptation processes triggered by different environmental prerogatives. An interdisciplinary interpretive approach including the dimensions of geohistorical, and physical-geographical research is proposed.
In connection with this approach, landscape, a key concept in the geographical sciences, is taken as a synthesis of the historical relations between society and the environment. Its values and the transformative pressures to which it is subjected are analyzed from a geohistorical perspective, with particular attention to long-term processes.

1. Knowledge and understanding:
1.1 Knowledge of the basic concepts of the geography of the environment and landscape
1.2 Knowledge of the evolutive patterns of landscapes, with particular reference to European agrarian landscapes

2. Applying knowledge and analyzing:
2.1 Use the tools of geography to interpret territorial and socio-cultural diversity, processes of different spatial development, and the elements that act in the production of geographic landscapes
2.2 Know how to identify the determinants of landscape conservation and transformation

3. Ability to judge:
3.1 Evaluate the historical and environmental factors, that contribute to shaping some geographical reality
3.2 Know how to interpret the landscape in its constituent elements, including as tools for territorial enhancement and communication

4. Communication skills:
4.1 Writing in a logic, coherent and synthetic style, in order to expose the knowledge gained
4.2 Use of an appropriate semantic and linguistic register

No prerequisites are required
During the course, some key issues in the geography of the environment (environment-society relationship) and landscape will be addressed: definitions, study approaches, evolutionary patterns of landscape, transformative pressures, and critique of the concepts of landscape heritage. Some case studies related to mountain landscapes, both Italian and European, will be approached.

Written exam with questions targeted at the measurement of the ability to apply knowledge and understanding and the ability to judge. For students attending classes exam questions will be on lesson’s notes and on the specified textbooks; for non-attending students questions will be on the specified textbooks.
